Balayage
What is a Balayage?
So, you’re wanting a balayage but not completely sure on what a balayage is, and how to mantain it? You’ve come to the right place.
A balayage is a specialist technique not a result. It is a freehand technique which is applied to create natural looking sun-kissed highlights in the hair. Balayage gives a softer dark to light effect and is perfect for someone that wants a low mantainance colour. The blended look has no harsh or obvious regrowth lines, and is a great way to introduce yourself to colour without too much commitment.
It is considered to be a bespoke service, as everyone’s hair is different and the desired result will differ for each client.
Not every Balayage is blonde, it can create many multi tonal colours from dark to red, brown into copper, and even dark brown into caramel tones. It really can be for everyone.
Reality and Desired Results
Sometimes the reality vs desired result can be totally different. There are a lot of images out there to chose from, this might not always be achievable in one visit, but nice to have as an end goal. You’re not going to go from very dark to a faded platinum blonde in an hour or two, probably not even in a day.
This is why there are so many variations of balayage around. A good stylists will give good advice and educate their clients with what their reality is. Results at one appointment are limited by several factors –
- Time available
- What is your hair’s condition
- Where your hair is currently at (start point)
- Your budget
Let’s say you’re brunette and have dark coloured hair.
A more standard 3-5 hours appointment will give you a warmer tone, as its more likely that the hair will only be able to lift to a coppery level. Exactly what tone is unknown until towards the end of the appointment, as we’re dictated to your hair, how easy it lifts and what it lifts to.
If you want your hair lighter, cooler or not as coppery/orange then it may take a few appointments as over time more of the older tone can lift out.
